THE RESTFUL DISCIPLINE OF PRAYER

In the garden before the cross Jesus asked His disciples if they could not even pray for an hour. I'm afraid He would have to ask us if we can pray for five minutes. Extended prayer is particularly difficult in our lives so filled with responsibilities, blessings, and distractions.Praying significantly in the midst of writing is also quite difficult, and requires discipline. I maintain a series of prayer lists for people and concerns around me. And I try to pray for them in occasional breaks in…See More

HUNGERING FOR GOD

Do you pray because you hunger for God? Or do you want what you are praying for more than you want God? I recently heard someone tell about being so desperate for something she wanted, that she spent days hunting for things she was doing wrong to repent of so God would  answer her prayer. And she said God did answer.Do you hear the theology behind that? The notion that we need to get as right with God as possible so he will give us what we really want is not Christian. It is typical religion.…See More

The Gospel!

We often think of the gospel as that most elementary truth of the Christian life that you leave behind as you grow deeper in the faith. But that is not true at all. It is true that the gospel is simple and may be the first thing a person becoming a believer understands. But we never outgrow the importance of the gospel in our lives. The Humility of the GospelFew things are more important in the Christian life than humility. SANCTIFIED IMAGINATION

I recently heard an interview with Tim Keller in which he said something that seems to apply most to writing.“Prayer sanctifies your imagination. It plunges it into God.”Let me suggest a few ways prayer affects your imagination.Few books or series stretch the reader’s imagination like C.S. Lewis’ Narnia Chronicles. Lewis said the idea for the first book came to him from a picture in his mind of a faun standing under a street lamp on a snowy evening with an umbrella in one hand, and parcels held…See More

THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE SPIRIT

One of the most wonderful truths of the Christian life is the fellowship of the Spirit. Paul puts it forth so vividly in his salutation in the final verse of 2 Corinthians.“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”In the discussion on friendship love in his book The Four Loves, C.S. Lewis talked about three close friends, Jack, Charles and Ronald, who met together every week. They were so close until Charles died. And…See More

PRAYING ABOUT WHAT TO WRITE

The simplest way to do this is to ask God to give You ideas, and lead you to what you should write. But most of us will see this as more complex. LISTENING TO GOD One of the most common Scriptural principles is that God speaks. He seldom speaks twice in the same way. God can even speak to us in His silence. 1 Corinthians 9:24 says the things of God are spiritually discerned. If you understand something in Scripture the Holy Spirit is speaking to you. There are Many times I did not realize God…See More

David, apologies for taking so long to get back to you - my recent out-of-state move has pretty much dominated my time and I'm only now getting back to being on PN consistently.  I appreciate what you shared and the heart of integrity behind it.  You are a great example to me!

I would also say that praying for the SC justices by name and simply leaving in God's hands how he wants to work in their lives and through their rulings is a very valid way to pray.  The strength of our prayers is not in the words, but in the One to whom we pray - not that you need to hear that from me!!
