WRITE DOWN THE REVELATION

Continue to look with me at this powerful passage from Habakkuk 2. Verse 2 reads,“Then the LORD replied: Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.”Let's focus on two applications of this verse; The Foundation of Writing                    andThe Purpose of WritingIt stretches metaphor to say the foundation of our writing is from above. But I think you get the point here. When you are in fellowship with God you will see the same things you saw…See More

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE GOSPEL

In the week that we set aside to celebrate the cross and the resurrection of Jesus we remind one another of importance of the gospel. In 1 Corinthians 15 Paul reminds the believers in Corinth, and a thousand generations who would follow, of the gospel that transforms lives. Verses one through three read,"Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to…See More

WRITING FROM THE RAMPARTS OF PRAYER

Many Christian writers are familiar with Habakkuk 2:1-3. God has used those words to speak to us and encourage you in our writing. In the next few weeks I would like to link those verses with writing prayerfully.Verse 1 reads,“I will stand at my watch   and station myself on the ramparts;I will look to see what he will say to me,   and what answer I am to give to this complaint.”Jesus called us to “Watch and pray.” Most of us rightly think of watching so we can pray. But, have ever prayer…See More

GOSPEL WAGES

Possibly even more than Romans 3:23, the passage we last dealt with in this blog, Romans 6:23 sounds like anything but good news. That is partly because we have been bombarded all of our lives with the nonsense of self-esteem. You are important! You are wonderful! You are flawless! You are a winner! You can be anything you want to be!But as helpful as that thinking may be, it strikes many of us as unreal, a little like the Easter Bunny. We were on the ball team where everyone got a meaningless…See More

IDEAL PRAYER

I want to speak to you today about ideal prayer. I want you to see the nature of the prayer life we are growing into. Before I begin, I need to say that you do not have to be mature in your prayer to connect with God and affect the world. The Bible calls us to pray all the time whether you know what to pray or not. Although we are weak and shallow and immature, we're praying to a God who is infinite, all-knowing, and all-powerful.At the same time it is important to see what our prayer is…See More

THE GOSPEL AND GLORY

We ought to see everything in Scripture in the light Jesus and through the lens of the gospel. From time to time over the next few months  I want to show how one passage or another can be seen through the perspective of the gospel.I will begin with a passage that most of us would use to present the gospel. Taken alone it may sound like nothing but law and judgment. But that is not really the case. This verse is a lift ticket to ascend the glory and grace of the gospel. The verse is Romans…See More

THE RESTFUL DISCIPLINE OF PRAYER

In the garden before the cross Jesus asked His disciples if they could not even pray for an hour. I'm afraid He would have to ask us if we can pray for five minutes. Extended prayer is particularly difficult in our lives so filled with responsibilities, blessings, and distractions.Praying significantly in the midst of writing is also quite difficult, and requires discipline. I maintain a series of prayer lists for people and concerns around me. And I try to pray for them in occasional breaks in…See More

HUNGERING FOR GOD

Do you pray because you hunger for God? Or do you want what you are praying for more than you want God? I recently heard someone tell about being so desperate for something she wanted, that she spent days hunting for things she was doing wrong to repent of so God would  answer her prayer. And she said God did answer.Do you hear the theology behind that? The notion that we need to get as right with God as possible so he will give us what we really want is not Christian. It is typical religion.…See More

The Gospel!

We often think of the gospel as that most elementary truth of the Christian life that you leave behind as you grow deeper in the faith. But that is not true at all. It is true that the gospel is simple and may be the first thing a person becoming a believer understands. But we never outgrow the importance of the gospel in our lives. The Humility of the GospelFew things are more important in the Christian life than humility. Peter said, "Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, and he will…See More

David, apologies for taking so long to get back to you - my recent out-of-state move has pretty much dominated my time and I'm only now getting back to being on PN consistently.  I appreciate what you shared and the heart of integrity behind it.  You are a great example to me!

I would also say that praying for the SC justices by name and simply leaving in God's hands how he wants to work in their lives and through their rulings is a very valid way to pray.  The strength of our prayers is not in the words, but in the One to whom we pray - not that you need to hear that from me!!
